Sitting at my desk and thinking about Lucian’s wolf and chicken analogy, I checked all my usual tabs to see if anything had appeared on my radar. I pulled my phone out of my bag and placed it on the charging station.

The text. With all the tension, I hadn’t given the text much thought.

Who in God’s name could have sent a text about Perry and Stone? They were remnants of the past. It was all over. Both dead and buried, no one is going to go to any lengths to avenge those two low-life pieces of shit.

Perry, a rapist and thug. Stone, a serial killer and bent cop. No one’s going to lose sleep over those two. I couldn’t let it rest, though. If someone knew something, then I needed to know who that person was and make sure they had nothing concrete to hold against me, especially now. I didn’t have time for this shit.

My phone sprang into life. The caller display read Nick. Shit, I should have called him earlier. I answered.

“What’s up, lover boy?” I tried to sound casual. Kept my voice even.

He laughed, which was a bit of a relief. “You forgot to call me back.”

“Sorry, so sorry. I made a mistake and got into a little trouble at work. Nothing to worry about. I’m trying to get things back on track.”

“Braqueur tell you off?”

“I’m afraid he did. Please don’t feel the need to defend my honour,” I said with a smile in my voice.

“Yeah, I think I’ll dodge that bullet. You free for lunch?”

“Sorry, got to sort this thing out. Then I can take my foot off the pedal for a little while. How about dinner?”

“Sounds good. I’ve just bought some fresh pasta from Sainsbury’s. I’ll knock up something tasty.”

“See you at your place,” Nick signed off.

With my phone in my hand, I went back to the text.

I know you killed Perry and Stone. I’m coming for you.

From an Unknown Caller. I pushed in the cable that I use for interrogating data from phones. The software automatically opened, displaying the front-end interface. I examined the caller ID and the PAC codes. But it was from a burner SIM. A nondescript pay-as-you-go card. Nothing attached to a person, no identifiers.

Who would know about these events? I tried a location match. Nothing came up. They might have switched the phone off. If there’s no power on the phone, then using location services was a bit of a waste of time. Most criminals would actually take the batteries out of burner cells when they didn’t want any kind of trace on their location.

I wanted to shake this off. Concentrate on Marković and Kelenko, but I couldn’t. It was like a shadowy attic gathering at the back of my mind. Who the hell was this person? What could they do? They can’t have any solid evidence. If they did, they’d take it straight to the cops. Were they after the money? A blackmail scheme of some sort? I haven’t got any money, not real money anyway, only Paul’s cash that he nicked from Roxy.
